What’s the Difference Between Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy?

If you’re dealing with pain, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to move and feel better, you may have wondered whether you should see a chiropractor or try physical therapy. While both approaches can support mobility, function, and overall well-being, they aren’t exactly the same.

Chiropractic care and physical therapy focus on different aspects of the body and use different techniques to help patients reach their goals. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to choose one or the other.

At Health by Design Chiropractic, we believe these approaches can work together. By combining chiropractic care with physical therapy and other wellness services when appropriate, we can create a more comprehensive care plan based on each patient’s individual needs.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care primarily focuses on the musculoskeletal system, including the spine, joints, muscles, and their relationship with the nervous system. Chiropractors assess how the body is moving and functioning and may use adjustments and other techniques to address joint restrictions and support mobility.

While back and neck pain are common reasons people visit a chiropractor, chiropractic care isn’t limited to the spine. Depending on the patient and their needs, chiropractors may evaluate and work with areas throughout the body, including the shoulders, hips, knees, and other joints.

At Health by Design, chiropractic care begins with an assessment. We take the time to learn about your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and goals before determining an appropriate treatment plan. From there, your chiropractor may use hands-on adjustments, tool-assisted techniques, soft-tissue work, or other approaches depending on your individual needs.

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy places a strong emphasis on movement, strength, mobility, and physical function. Physical therapists evaluate how a person moves and develop treatment plans designed to improve or restore function, manage pain, and help prevent future limitations.

Rather than relying on one treatment method, physical therapy can include therapeutic exercises, stretching, mobility work, strengthening, manual techniques, and other interventions based on the individual.

Physical therapy may be beneficial for someone recovering from an injury or surgery, experiencing weakness or limited mobility, or working to improve strength and joint stability.

At Health by Design, our physical therapy services can include personalized exercises and stretches along with treatments such as soft tissue and myofascial release, cupping, scraping, electrotherapy, and tapping when appropriate.

So, What’s the Main Difference?

One of the biggest differences between chiropractic care and physical therapy is where each approach places its primary focus.

Chiropractic care often emphasizes joint function and mobility through techniques such as chiropractic adjustments, while physical therapy places greater emphasis on restoring movement, building strength, improving stability, and helping patients maintain function through exercise and rehabilitation.

There is also plenty of overlap. Both approaches can involve hands-on treatment, mobility work, patient education, and individualized care. The exact experience will depend on the provider, the patient’s condition, and their treatment goals.

That overlap is also why chiropractic care and physical therapy don’t have to be viewed as competing options. In many cases, they can address different pieces of the same problem.

Can Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy Work Together?

Yes. Depending on your needs, combining chiropractic care and physical therapy may provide a more comprehensive approach than focusing on either one alone.

For example, chiropractic care may be used to address restricted joint movement, while physical therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles that support those joints and improving movement patterns. As mobility improves, exercises and stretches may help a patient build strength and maintain that progress between appointments.

This is a major part of the philosophy behind Health by Design. Our approach is Assess, Adjust, Integrate. Instead of stopping after an adjustment, we look at what else your body may need to support long-term function. Depending on your individual care plan, that may include physical therapy, strengthening exercises, soft-tissue treatments, massage, nutrition, or other services available through our integrated wellness clinic.

Which One Is Right for You?

There isn’t a single answer that applies to everyone. Whether chiropractic care, physical therapy, or a combination of the two makes sense depends on factors such as your symptoms, health history, mobility, strength, injury history, and personal goals.

That’s why an evaluation is so important.

At Health by Design Chiropractic, our goal isn’t simply to decide between chiropractic care and physical therapy. We want to understand what is contributing to the way you’re feeling and determine which combination of services may best support your needs.

If you’re experiencing pain, stiffness, limited mobility, weakness, or difficulty getting back to the activities you enjoy, our team can help you explore your options and develop a personalized plan designed around you.
