5 Signs It Might Be Time to See a Chiropractor

It’s easy to brush off an occasional ache, stiff neck, headache, or tingling sensation—especially when life gets busy. But when symptoms become persistent, keep returning, or begin interfering with the way you move and feel throughout the day, it may be worth paying closer attention.

Chiropractic care is often thought of as being focused only on bones, joints, or “cracking backs.” In reality, chiropractors evaluate the neuromusculoskeletal system—the interconnected relationship between the nervous system, muscles, joints, and spine.

Your nervous system plays an essential role in movement, muscle activation, coordination, sensation, balance, reflexes, and pain. The nerves exiting the spinal cord communicate with structures throughout the body, which means symptoms involving the spine and extremities are not always limited to muscles and joints alone.

At Health by Design Chiropractic, our evaluations consider not only where you hurt, but also how your muscles, joints, and nervous system are functioning together. Depending on the individual, this may include assessing mobility, muscle function, neurologic responses, sensation, balance, coordination, reflexes, posture, and other aspects of neuromuscular function.

While everyone’s needs are different, certain symptoms may be a sign that it’s time to have your movement and neuromusculoskeletal function evaluated.

Persistent Pain

Most of us experience aches and pains from time to time. Maybe you slept in an awkward position, pushed yourself a little too hard during a workout, or spent too many hours sitting at your desk. In many cases, minor discomfort improves on its own.

Pain that continues to return or doesn’t seem to improve, however, deserves attention. Persistent discomfort in areas such as the back, neck, shoulders, or hips can be associated with joint restrictions, muscle tension, repetitive movements, previous injuries, nerve irritation, altered movement patterns, or other neuromusculoskeletal issues.

Pain itself is also a nervous-system experience. Sensory information travels through nerves to the spinal cord and brain, where it is processed and interpreted. This is one reason a thorough evaluation should look beyond simply identifying the spot that hurts.

Rather than getting used to living with discomfort, a chiropractor can evaluate how your joints, muscles, and nervous system are functioning together and determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Poor Posture

Think about how much time you spend looking at a computer, scrolling on your phone, driving, or sitting throughout the day. Over time, these habits can influence posture and place additional stress on certain muscles and joints.

You might notice your shoulders beginning to round forward, your head sitting farther in front of your shoulders, or discomfort developing after sitting or standing for extended periods.

Posture isn’t controlled by bones alone. Your nervous system continuously receives sensory information about your body’s position and coordinates muscle activity to help you maintain posture, balance, and movement.

A chiropractic evaluation can look at posture, spinal movement, muscle function, and everyday habits to identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Depending on your needs, care may also incorporate mobility work, stretching, strengthening, rehabilitation exercises, or ergonomic recommendations to help improve function.

Decreased Mobility

Have everyday movements started feeling more difficult than they used to? Maybe turning your head while driving feels restricted, reaching overhead is uncomfortable, or bending and twisting feels unusually stiff.

A noticeable decrease in range of motion can happen for several reasons, including muscle tightness, joint stiffness, injury, inactivity, repetitive movement patterns, or changes in how muscles and the nervous system are coordinating movement.

Healthy movement requires constant communication between the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, and joints. Your nervous system receives information about joint position and movement and uses that feedback to help coordinate appropriate muscular responses.

That is why chiropractic care can involve more than simply improving joint motion. At Health by Design Chiropractic, we may also evaluate how the muscles and nervous system are responding during movement and incorporate rehabilitative or neurologically focused strategies when appropriate. If stiffness or limited mobility is beginning to affect your workouts, workday, hobbies, or daily activities, it may be worth having it evaluated.

Frequent Headaches

Headaches can have many different causes, including dehydration, stress, sleep issues, eyestrain, medications, and underlying medical conditions. In some cases, however, headaches can also be associated with dysfunction involving the neck, joints, muscles, and nerves.

For example, spending hours hunched over a computer or looking down at a phone can contribute to tension throughout the neck and upper back. Certain headache patterns may have a cervical or neuromusculoskeletal component that a chiropractor can evaluate.

Because headaches have so many potential causes, frequent, severe, new, or changing headaches should always be taken seriously. Your chiropractor can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate or whether evaluation by another healthcare provider is needed.

Radiating Pain or Tingling

Pain doesn’t always stay in one place. Sometimes discomfort travels from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand, or from the lower back into the hip, leg, or foot. Other people experience burning, tingling, numbness, weakness, altered sensation, or a “pins and needles” feeling.

These symptoms are especially important because they may involve the nervous system.

Nerves branch from the spinal cord and travel throughout the body. Irritation or dysfunction affecting a nerve somewhere along its pathway can sometimes produce symptoms away from the original source. Sciatica and certain forms of cervical radiculopathy are familiar examples, although radiating symptoms can have many different causes.

Neuropathy can also cause symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, altered sensation, or weakness and may have causes unrelated to the spine. Because of this, identifying the possible source of nerve-related symptoms is important before determining an appropriate course of care.

At Health by Design Chiropractic, we don’t want to simply chase the location of the symptom. We evaluate the neuromusculoskeletal system to better understand how the spine, peripheral nerves, muscles, and movement patterns may be contributing to what you’re experiencing.

When appropriate, chiropractic care and rehabilitation may be incorporated into a treatment plan. If your examination suggests that your symptoms require additional testing or evaluation by another healthcare provider, an appropriate referral can be made.

Chiropractic Care Is About More Than Bones

Your muscles, joints, spine, and nervous system do not function independently of one another. They are constantly communicating and adapting to help you move, maintain balance, respond to your environment, and perform everyday activities.

That relationship is why chiropractic care at Health by Design Chiropractic goes beyond simply asking, “Where does it hurt?”

We want to understand why you’re experiencing the symptoms you’re experiencing and how your body is functioning as a whole.

Depending on your condition, your evaluation and treatment may address joint mobility, muscular function, neuromuscular responses, posture, movement patterns, peripheral nerve involvement, balance, coordination, and other aspects of nervous-system function.

Our goal is not simply to perform an adjustment and send you on your way. We take the time to evaluate each patient individually and develop care based on their examination findings, symptoms, needs, and goals.

Pay Attention to What Your Body Is Telling You

You don’t necessarily have to wait until discomfort becomes severe to start paying attention. Persistent pain, postural changes, decreased mobility, recurring headaches, radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or other changes in function can all be reasons to seek a professional evaluation.

At Health by Design Chiropractic, we take the time to understand what you’re experiencing and evaluate how your musculoskeletal and nervous systems are working together. From there, care can be tailored to your individual findings, needs, and goals.

If something hasn’t been feeling quite right, consider scheduling an appointment with Health by Design Chiropractic to learn more about your options and take the next step toward moving and functioning at your best.
